My first Kenny Chesney concert tour experience was awesome. My husband and I attended a Kenny concert in Birmingham, Alabama at the Verizon Wireless Park. The outdoor concert park was filled to capacity. Opening for Kenny was Pat Green, who played Wave on Wave and got the crowd cranked up for Sugarland.
The row in front of us knew all the words to the Sugarand songs and sang along to every song. Everyone was on their feet so we had to stand up too. The performance of Sugarland was an incredible introduction for Kenny. Although we were sitting in the cheap seats, the 3 large video screen showed what was happening on the stage as if you had front row seats.
Kenny's introduction was brilliant with the pirate theme and the advertisements for his new Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates cd coming out Septembet 11 were on the video screens during the set-up time between Sugarland and Kenny's opening performance. A large cutain covered the stage which had a pirate skull with wearing a palm-leaf straw cowboy hat just like Kenny Chesney .
When Kenny came out on the stage he was wearing blue jeans and a sleeveless blue t-shirt, with a trademark Kenny Chesney black felt cowboy hat . Kenny spoke to the crowd in Birmingham and sang almost every song as if he had written it just for the folks in the state of Alabama. The video screen showed pictures of all the colleges and Universities as if the whole production has been designed for the people in the state of Alabama.
He said, You know there are alot of problems in the world today... but for the next few hours no one here has to think about them." Then he sang, "No Shoes, Noe Shirt, No Problems" and the crowd went wild. That was truly the experience I had for the next 2 hours, all my problems were forgotten as we partyied with KC. Just singing along with him and thousands of others on a beautiful September evening. Sometimes, he made us feel like we were back in high school, or college or even at a honky-tonk down in Mexico.
Things really heated up when Uncle Kracker and Kenny Chesney started rapping. But the crowd in Bimingham went wild when they did an old David Allen Coe song and everyone sang along. Next was "Cowboy" and people were waving their straw cowboy hats in the air.
I would have to say, my first Kenny Chesney concert experience was better than I could have imagined and days later I am still flashing back to the songs he sang that I just can't get out of my head. As the summer Flip Flop Tour draws to a close, I am now ready for more. I am saddened that I have to wait a whole year to see him in concert again. Maybe when my Poets and Pirates cd comes in the mail, I can hold on until next summer.
